School Crossing Guards
Providing for the safety of our children as they go to and from school is a major priority for the Police Department and as such, we have many part time employees that assist the children to cross our streets and highways. They divide their day to provide for coverage before school, at lunch time and after school for the many elementary schools in our area.

Crosswalk placement and configuration is the function of need and design and involves several agencies including local and state officials. Local engineers determine feasibility and location based on the number of children that might use any specific crosswalk, their location and distance from their school and the roadways that the children might need to cross on the way to school. The design is specified by state law which designates the required lighting, signs and road markings. Enforcement is left up to local law enforcement jurisdictions and the crossing guards provide for the safety of our children as they go to and from school. They attend periodic training sessions before and after they are hired to perform this very important service for our city. The traffic officers monitor each school crosswalk location for traffic violations, working hand in hand with the crossing guards to provide for the safety of our children, making traffic stops and giving citiations as appropriate.
